Aims and tasks of the Graduate Centre

The Graduate Centre is the central point of contact for those interested students and scholars interested in doing a PhD, doctoral researchers and postdocs, as well as for members of Bielefeld University who shape the framework conditions for doctoral studies.

The Graduate Centre:

  • bundles, coordinates and complements the transferable skills offer for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers in the personnel development programme (PEP);
  • operates a central service and counselling centre for all interested in doing a PhD, doctoral researchers and postdocs; and in particular offers counselling on the doctoral process, decision-making in relation to one's own research project and academic career paths;
  • supports female students, doctoral and postdoctoral researchers in the development of an academic career through the movement mentoring programme (good German listening comprehension required);
  • regularly implements the selection and allocation procedures of the Bielefeld Young Researchers' Fund (BNF);
  • networks coordinators of Research Training Groups and Schools, doctoral degree programmes as well as large collaborative research projects at Bielefeld University;
  • advises university members on the creation, maintenance and further development of framework conditions for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers; both within and outside of established doctoral degree courses or programmes, graduate schools or colleges and collaborative projects;
  • advises research training Groups, graduate schools, doctoral programmes and doctoral study programmes with regard to the respective qualification concept;
  • advises on joint applications with regard to the respective qualification concept for researchers in early career phases;
  • regularly evaluates doctoral statistics and data sets from the NACAPS survey (National Academics Panel Study of the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies) in terms of gender controlling; and
  • coordinates Bielefeld University's participation in the NACAPS study.
